I’m quite excited about seeing this when it eventually makes it’s way to Lunar viewscreens (America gets it on 19th September). Apparently it’s about the first days of prohibition in and around Atlantic City and has what looks to be a great cast: Steve Buscemi, Michael Pitt, Tommy from Snatch as Al Capone and our very own Kelly MacDonald. And one of the episodes is directed by some guy called Martin Scorsese. Should be a real hoot.
It’s wonderful, horrible, stunning, nuts, hilarious, crude, and the comedy timing is flawless. If this was a woman I’d marry it. As it is, it’s just a cartoon so I can only watch it. ‘Uncle Grandpa’ by Peter Browngardt. I look forward to seeing more of this kind of shenaniganary…
Latest news on the great man; his newest sit-com has a behind the scenes trailer thing where we see some actual scenes while all the actors say how great it is to be working in that DVD extra kind of way. The sit-com is based on some guys twitter thing about shit his dad said. Twitter is some strange device on the internet. Shatner was in Star Trek. sit-com stands for situational comedy. I think my work here is done.
This is a purely personal thing… one of my favourite shows is Magnum P.I and one of my favourite films is Star Wars but to put them together?? Is that too much geek?? I don’t think so… but then I think there’s nothing wrong with white socks and sandals.
A live tour of monsters and music from Dr Who, complete with newly shot footage has made me have to change my trousers. Twice. Tickets go on sale tomorrow, as this countdown widget subtly shows…
The election looms. Very few things in life ‘loom’. I believe an election is one of them. Tall people also loom…but we can kill them with smaller doorways. So many things are different in this election (…?…) and one of the most important to me (beyond changing things) is that we can maybe watch the results with a bit of a sense of humour.
Another cop drama? Maybe. But this one stars (gasp!!) A Black Man! And interestingly, this guy is going to play a Norse God in the upcoming Marvel Thor film, directed by Kenneth “sweats Shakespeare” Branagh. Ignoring all that Hollywod bullcrap (Hollyshit), it looks pretty darned good in it’s own right…
To be honest, I can’t quite figure out if this is genius or glorified bullying. Pilkington is just too funny not to mention. Plus I will assume Gervais loves him dearly as we all would, thus making the whole thing morally acceptable. Question mark smiley face.
I thought I had dreamt this (because this is what most of my dreams are like) but it is real people! William Shatner and some other person (the Taiwanese Susan Boyle? Really?) sing ‘total eclipse of the heart’. Gold dust.
Despite sounding like a cheap sword ‘n sorcery show for the SyFy chanel, this is in fact a pretty cool looking take on the old ‘cop & special person’ genre which may be an oversaturated genre at the moment. Did I mention genre? It stars Nate “captain tight pants” Fillion as a lechy crime novelist (not a million miles away from Jessica ‘letcher’ fletcher) who, as far as I can tell from the below trailer, has Droopy’s ability to appear anywhere much to that wolf guys chagrin…
Watched the first episode last night, and I dunno. It stars that guy from Boston Legal who was also in some other TV shows I have tried to watch, and now he’s in this. It reminds me of the Rockford files combined with Danger man combined with cheese. It is fun nonsense action, and if you’re like me and will watch anything to avoid your responsibilities as a human being it definitely looks like one of the better shows you can burn off your existence with. I wonder if this guy will find film gigs soon, or whether he will just become a TV mainstay. Oh, it also has Watchman’s jackie Earle Haley (Rorschach) playing a small creepy dude. As usual. WARNING: the below trailer shows everything that happens in the first episode. You don’t really watch something like this for surprises though. Also, not shown is a random and unnessicary cameo by Danny Glover. Oh shit, I just spoilt that for you as well. I like it!
Don’t get me wrong, I think this show about one of my least favourite Friends (Joey gets number one on my hate-mometer) (I don’t have a hate-mometer) (I don’t know what a hate-mometer would look like) (what is hate??)…don’t get me wrong, I am probably not the target audience for this show, but I shall try to watch it so that I can find a way of discovering ‘hate’ and then creating a ‘-mometer’ to gauge my disdain. Maybe I’m to judgemental of things that don’t have explosions in them…
Many of you will have already caught Professor Brian “not just a haircut” Cox (yes, he was the keyboardist in D:Ream don’t you know) on the wonder-full ‘Wonders of the Solar System’ recently on BBC;
OK, so that was a parody, but is does capture the charm (or annoyance if you’re grumpy) of the show; smiley charismatic northern chappy telling us how brilliant everything is in the universe is from lots of glamourous locations- only the real thing has a little more science and less swearing. It seems physics is the new rock and roll- or at least friendly 90s pop music circa ‘Now 26′. Mr Cox’s ‘in person’ appearance at Filmhouse Edinburgh this month already sold out (and I would be surprised if he has some groupies). But seriously, the man is very clever in deed, and importantly has an amazing talent for explaining complicated and scary things like they’re really not that scary or complicated at all. We all want to have a pint with him. Apparently, he’s already working on a new show ‘Universal’. Though you’d think they’d get someone from Blur to present that…
The lizard people are coming! Again! This could be good (the original mini-series way back when had it’s moments) and it stars Firefly’s Inara and the X-Files Alex (boo) Critchek. Holding my breath on this one. Could go either way. UK premiere on the 13th on the Sci-Fi channel. Let’s hope we get to see the beautiful Morena Baccarin eat a guineapig.
The second series of this corrosive look at crappy TV returns and it’s about time. Some of you may not be fans of Brookers petulant style, but I think he always has a good point to make. It returns on Channel 4 on thursday 15th of April and it is worth a squint. Here’s a clip from the last season if you missed it;
To be honest, I stopped finding ’hidden camera’ shows funny when Jermey Beadle returned to his planet, which is annoying because the characters in this sequel to ‘fonejacker’ all look fun. I’m gonna watch it, then might regret it. We’ll see…
It’s on friday 16th April on Channel 4 and it better not be one of those shows where irritating people quote from it for the next 8 months of our lives before some new fad comes along.
just a reminder that Ashes to Ashes is on Friday nights 9pm BBC (tonight, for example) and Dr Who is on Saturday nights around 6ish (tomorrow, for example). They are both excellent.
The prequel series to Battlestar is so weird I can’t figure out whether I like it or not. I appreciate that it is not, by any standard, normal American TV. That is a good thing. Beyond that I don’t know. It confuses me in the same way that Lady boys are confusing. Maybe not quite. All I’m saying is I need to see more of it to be convinced. It is science fiction at such a personal level (It’s about parents dealing with the death of their kids) that it doesn’t just turn the tables on our expectations, it tips the table right over so that the table legs are sticking up… then it impails you on one or more of the legs of this metaphorical science fiction table I’m talking about until you bleed confusion… but that is kinda awesome. So Caprica gets my time. Glad to hear it may be getting a second season.
Returns on friday on BBC 1, I am lead to believe. The great Gene Hunt back on my telly box will be great. A final series!?! Will John Simm make an appearance?? Doubt it. Will Keeley Hawes get naked?? No. That would be an “In my head only” event. And I wouldn’t even be invited.. because I’m not dressed properly for “ridiculously sexy”…
I also want to check out the American version of Life on Mars which features Colm Meany, A Star Trek TNG and DS9 regular, therefore someone whom I consider close family for geeky reasons (my geek family or ‘geekamily’ is extensive, but loving).
No one will be surprised to know that I am not only going to be watching the new Dr Who, but I may be expelling all my bodily fluids all at once whilst I am doing so. That’s the way I roll… excited and grubby. From the little I’ve seen, Matt Smith looks great, and the loss of Russell T Davis and David Tennant will be slightly less painful in the knowledge that Stephen Moffat is now in control. Only slightly.
Alex Chilton started out in Memphis and moved to New Orleans. He recorded a jazz album there and later was evacuated from his house after Hurricane Katrina. So like a virtuoso piece of improvisation this brings me round to an exciting new HBO TV series ‘Treme’ created by David Simon (writer of so-critically-raved-about-I-wouldn’t-blame-you-for-deliberately-not-watching -it-now-if-you-haven’t-seen-it-already-but-it-really-is-very-good ‘The Wire’). It’s meant to chart a post-Katrina N’awlins and the inhabitants struggling to rebuild it and get on with their lives. It sounds like the kind of thing Simon does very well. And if nothing else, the music should be amazing. And John Goodman is in it. Here’s a trailer;
