axe cop/mcninja yay!

Finally, two of my favourite web-comic heros are uniting in what will become a completely joyful bat-shit insane story. If you aren’t familiar with them, Dr mcninja is a comic created by grown man Chris Hastings about a ninja… who’s also a doctor… who fights zombie ninjas and pirates with the help of his gorilla secretary and a boy with a moustache and a dinosaur. Pretty standard stuff really. Axe Cop is a cop. With an axe. It is written by a 6 year old and illustrated by his older brother. Really.

Here’s an example of the Axe-cop writing process;

 This story is going to be mental my friends. It has been posted everyday on Axecop.com this week and the final parts will be on Drmcninja.com  everyday next week. Strap in.

Settle down and watch this incedible award winning documentary animation about the brief life of the humble water vole as it…does ninja…for love…

Hi! Apologies for the lack of posts around these parts recently, but hey, you should see my bathroom. Maybe I should flush once in a while. Here’s a great little stop motion animation for Turin Breaks song Sea change. I was quite moved when ‘corporal crouch-with-the-pistol-and-shorts’ died, but now I’ve said too much…

Ok Go are a cool band who make amazing one-shot music videos which are as elaborate as they are epic. Check out the other videos such as… on a treadmill here and an amazing Wallace and Gromit style contraption here. Here is their latest, with what looks like a new band member near the end. A goose…

Volcano Time-Lapse

The earth can be a pretty pretty pretty impressive thing sometimes, and I am glad to be considered one of its close and personal friends. Seriously, it like texts me at least 3 times a day. This beautiful time-lapse of the recent Icelandic volcano shows us how lucky we have been for so long. Missing a flight is not so bad. Living next to it might cause problems. Hey, at least it didn’t explode, or worse… at least an army of Mole-Men didn’t jump out and enslave the human race. Yet.

Let’s be clear: I hate dancing. It’s stoopid, It makes me tired and most importantly I can’t do it. But there is one type of dance I like, and by using the words ’10 Cartoon Dances’ in the post title I really don’t need to waste any more of our time for the slow reveal of what type of dancing that is. It’s cartoon dancing.

Here are some of the cartoon people dancing that make me Mr gigglyface…

Some genius has taken the comedy music from the great Songstowearpantsto and have made a neat music video to accompany said song. It is called ‘Robot Pirates’ and is about robot pirates. Yaar

Songstowearpantsto if we remember, boys and girls, is a cool site where you can email the guy with lyrics to a song and he creates it. Sometimes. He never made my song about a dinosaur librarian who doesn’t know the Dewey decimal system… but hey….I’m over it.

I’ve been marvelling much at a book I bought this week ‘10,000 Years of Art’, a mind-bogglingly long time I’ve been thinking (5 times as long as between Jesus and me in fact). But this has been put into sharper perspective by the latest ‘Where is Werner’ update… He is making a documentary about the earliest known some of the earliest known pictures anywhere; Chauvet cave in France. Using the latest cutting edge technology to bring us closer to the oldest art than we can ever get (the cave is shut to the public but Herzog ‘talked his way in’).

But the man has the imagination and power to make 32,000 years jump before your eyes like a cut between scenes- check here (around 5 minutes in) when he’s talking about how he thinks the paintings would flicker cinematically on the wall in firelight and then swings time to Swing Time circa 1938 when Fred Astaire achieved equally mysterious greatness when dancing with his shadows. (Read this for Herzog on Swing Time);

Then watch THIS for more from Herzog on 3D! Fascinating stuff. (If I sound like I’m obsessed with Herzog, its because I am).

It’s a very strange thing that happens when you watch this video of film KritiK and plastic haired human Mark Kermode as he makes the point against 3D films … you realise that the world doesn’t play with toys enough. Playing with toys makes everything fun and TRUE! Everything.

picture from sydneyobservatory.comI strongly recommend everyone check out the really amazing flash animation by artiste Fotoshop over on newgrounds in which you can slide a scale and see the size of things from the universe itself down to quantum particles, seeing various objects on the way, from stars to humans to rubicks cubes (both solved and unsolved). Not, however, my wang.

I also strongly recommend that I never post a post that mentions my ’wang’ ever again. Hi mum! (Also people who ‘know’ me know that anything makes my wang look small. Stop writing now? Yes please).

I saw it first on DVD. Then for no reason I can fathom I watched it in a cinema near me, and now a month after that it is showing again…and I will be watching it again. I strongly urge everyone to watch this…thing. It is…The Room. There is no reason for it to exist, but it is the most fun you will have in a cinema, because everyone around you is so angry.

Below is an interview by maholo daily with the elusive writer/director/producer/star/oddity behind the film Tommy Wiseau.

‘Kuky Returns’
Rosscoe | Funny, Video, art, film | 22nd 03, 2010| No Comments »

Don’t watch this trailer for Czech film ‘Kuky Returns’ if you are feeling a bit weird, because it won’t make you feel any better. It looks like a certain kind of nuts… the kind of crazy nuts that only grow in mental forests and taste like dribbling insanity. I need to see it. I love the look of it, and the little awesome flaming car chases…

Talking of Big Star and Memphis more generally reminded me of awesome Memphis-born photographer William Eggleston who turns the ordinary into the extraordinary. I only really found out about the guy from a BBC Imagine documentary last year but had unwittingly admired his work on these aforementioned Big Star and Alex Chilton albums;

Big Star; Radio City Alex Chilton; Like Flies on Sherbert

And this album by extremely awesome band Silver Jews;
Silver jews; tanglewood Numbers

And now it seems a highly rated new album by one of my other highly rated bands- Spoon- also features an Eggleston photo.
Spoon; Transference

His pictures are to photography what rock and roll is to music- taking everyday boredom and isolation and making it beautiful.
