can this be the future?

A man (nay…visionary) called Gilo Cardozo reckons he has created the Holy grail of geek science…the sky car! In january he is planning to fly the car to Timbuktu. Yes. Fly. A car. To Timbuktu. Rockin’.

Fully road-legal - the car passed the government’s single vehicle approval test last month - and designed to run on bioethanol, Cardozo’s Skycar is powered by a modified 140bhp Yamaha R1 superbike engine with a lightweight automatic CVT (continuously variable transmission) gear-box from a snowmobile. It boasts Ferrari-beating acceleration on land, an air speed of up to 80mph and can swap between road and flight modes in minutes.

Narf.

With chief pilot and expedition organiser Neil Laughton, Cardozo will fly and drive the two-seater more than 3,700 miles to Timbuktu. Setting off on January 14, they will take about 40 days to reach the city in Mali, west Africa

Well,  for one can’t wait to see this, for a glimpse at a childhood dream made real, and also to finally see what Timbuktu looks like.

heres the article, and thanks to Pete for the heads up (and yes Pete, come January if this thing works I will die safe in the knowledge that the human race has arrived in the future it deserves)

mahoney for the winSpeculation madness as to who may take on the mantle of being the next Dr;

7/17 Patterson Joseph
9/1 Robert Carlyle
19/2 David Morrisey
21/2 Rhys Ifans
11/1 Anthony Head
15/1 Chiwetel Ejiofor, James Nesbitt
24/1 Colin Salmon
29/1 Sean Pertwee, Russell Tovey
31/1 Richard Coyle, Richard E Grant
39/1 Jennifer Saunders, Catherine Tate, John Simm
49/1 Billie Piper
59/1 Alan Davies, Jack Davenport, Stephen Fry
64/1 James Mcavoy
99/1 Aidan Gillen, Paul McGann, Ben Wishaw, Bill Nighy, Harry Lloyd, Jason Statham, John Barrowman, Dexter Fletcher, Julian Walsh, Rowan Atkinson, Jim Broadbent, Tom Ellis, Nigel Harman, Daniel Radcliffe
There is afew impossibilities and stinkers in there. Also of note, Warwick Davis of Willow and Star wars fame has stated
“I had a great idea: Doctor Who is going to change, regenerate, but something goes a bit wrong. For just a couple of episodes it would be me as the Doctor, they go in the Tardis and inside it’s not vast, it’s tiny and they all bang their heads!”
I’m voting for that one. That or Steve Guttenberg.

Battlestar galactica ends
Rosscoe | TV | 27th 11, 2008| No Comments »

Battlestar galactica finishes its fourth season (which was interupted by the writers strike) in January, where the whole epic thing will end…or at least they won’t make any more. It was a bloody brilliant show, reminded me of me when I was that age…

Canadian Meteor
Craig | Science | 27th 11, 2008| 1 Comment »

Around a week ago a pretty big meteor was seen screaming across the skies in the Edmunton area of Canada. Finally found a half decent video of it and it looks pretty epic.

It is assumed that it did hit earth, but nothing has been found as of yet. The usual size of a meteor hitting our atmosphere is tiny, the size of a grain of sand, so although it looks like its the end of the world in the video its relatively small.

I’m sure there is more point to my life than to worry about up coming Sci-fi remakes, but I don’t know what it is, so here is me worrying about the Day the Earth Stood Still remake. In its day it was a great warning, post world war 2, of the  violence of man. I’m concerned that the new one may just be a film about how awesome it is to be American…

Paterson Speaks…

Paterson Joseph

Interesting article over at BBC News. Paterson Joseph, current bookies favourite to take over from David Tennant as the Eleventh Doctor, speaks about the rumors surrounding him. Crucially he doesn’t deny it.

I first saw Mr P (as he will forever be known… you read it here first Moon Fans) in Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere back in 1996 and thought to myself then ‘He would make a great Doctor.

I love this guy. I so want the rumours to be true…

As promised, and fashionably late compared to the rest of the internets, behold the non dodgy trailer for the new Trek film. UGO.com have some positive things to say about the 4 scene preview of the new Star Trek film… but also some negative things which mirror my fan-boy concerns. Here’s some snippies;

J.J. Abrams struts up like the smartest kid in Hebrew school.  The first thing out of his mouth - the very motherloving first thing out of his mouth - is “I’ve never been a fan of Star Trek.”

Simon Pegg is terrific as Scotty.  In fact, if it weren’t for Urban as McCoy, I’d be losing my mind about Pegg.

I saw four scenes.  Two were terrific.  One was holy crap I don’t believe life can get so good effing fantastic.  And another was a thorough and malicious ass-raping of my childhood.  As an aside, J.J. Abrams did nothing to dispel the myth that he is a turd.  So call that a night of extreme mixed emotions.

Galaxy Zoo

Merging Galaxies
Ever feel insignificant?! Want to feel even more insignificant but feel better for being useful? The website galaxyzoo.org allows the reader to classify galaxies by looking at pictures taken from a robotic telescope. Obviously theyre not going to allow any Tom Dick or Harry to make the choice so you need to pass a test to determine if the galaxy is spiral, elliptical or merging, as well as the rotation direction.

Dr Lintott, a member of the team says

One advantage is that you get to see parts of space that have never been seen before. These images were taken by a robotic telescope and processed automatically, so the odds are that when you log on, that first galaxy you see will be one that no human has seen before.

They are hoping the public will make quick work of populating the galaxy database and solve theories such as whether galaxies are rotating all in agreement with each other or randomly.

Get involved and be useful.

A sadistic streak seems to be developing in British TV-land. In the likes of ‘I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here’, watching a rat nibbling at a daytime host’s eyelashes makes you think, it’s enough to make a Japanese game show look gentle and charming… (Some are, more later).

Which is why I thought I must have been dreaming when I saw the latest BBC Saturday night game thing Dale Winton hosted ‘Hole in the Wall’. But, alas not. I’m not that imaginative. Based on a Japanese show misnomered ‘human tetris’, ‘celebrities’ in alarmingly tight costumes are made to look silly in mildly amusing ways.
