RIP Jay Bennett (1963-2009), former Wilco musician and composer of beautiful melodies such as California Stars (set to lyrics by Woody Guthrie), and My Darling.

For more reasons why Jay was a loss to Wilco, and now the world, read here.

I have been obsessing recently about the beautiful voice of Israel Kamakawiwo’ole . The voice of an angel. He sang the version of ‘Over the Rainbow’ that you may have heard on the telly-box. Well he died a while ago, because he was huge. He played a tiny guitar as well, adding further awesomeness to injury… look at the greatness we lost;

Yahoo is reporting that uber-trendy moosic producer Danger Mouse (pictured) is in a feud with his record label EMI (also pictured; the toady looking guy). I don’t know what they are arguing about (I’m betting money, but I’m wishing it’s whether or not Timothy Dalton’s Bond is better than people give him credit for). Well Mr Mouse has been working on a new project with Sparklehorser Mark Linkous titled ‘Dark Night of the Soul’ with special guest stars;

Iggy Pop, The Strokes’ Julian Casablancas, Frank Black from The Pixies, Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips, Nina Persson and Super Furry Animals’ Gruff Rhys are all on the impressive guest list. Meanwhile, internationally renowned film-maker David Lynch is responsible for the visual side of the project, all of which goes some way to explaining the buzz around it.

  Sounds great, don’t it? Well Danger Mouse’s fight With Baron Greenback  EMI means that the limited edition CD will, in fact, be a blank CD-R. So that may been the most limited damned edition ever known to man. I can’t believe that will happen because I’m sure that it would break at least 3 trade laws, several international laws and at least 12 customers fists as they beat them repeatedly against their bedroom walls.

I don’t know who to be angry with; lovable Danger Mouse voiced by British acting legend David Jason, or the greasy Baron  EMI. But it seems to be an absurd stuation. ABSURD! Almost too absurd…. almost like this might just be a publicity thing…which would also make me angry.

Because I can’t decide, I’ll just be angry with myself, then jump over to NPR where I can listen to the whole album free and legally. Don’t know how long it will be up for, so catch it while you can. Whatever the hell is going on in all this, it doesn’t make anyone look good. Except for Timothy Dalton.

Found this amazing time lapse on neatorama.

Galactic Center of Milky Way Rises over Texas Star Party from William Castleman on Vimeo.

As you can see when the milky way appears we are at the outer arms of our spiral galaxy and it is known that we actually bob up and down like a cork on the water above and below the galactic plane. At the outer extremities of this bobbing our planet is subject to inter galactic radiation that our galaxy usually protects us from, therefore destroying all life on earth. Dont worry though, although I cant remember the exact amount of time it takes for a cycle I know its a huuuuuuge amount and we are presently safe near the galactic plane.

We Love You Back
Smiffy | art, film | 16th 05, 2009| 2 Comments »

Rosscoe has already posted the trailer for Where the Wild Things Are. And so to raise our pulse rates even further, director Spike Jonze and some of his production team have set up a rather enviable blog called We Love You So charting the various films, art, photography and-erm- skateboards that have all helped inspire the movie. If is this example is anything to go by we’re in for a treat.

It’s been a an exciting week for me so far, lots of things happening, the least of which being exposed as a misogynist because I tried to promote the work of a talented and successful woman. What a monster am I.

To correct this, I humbly draw your attention to an anti-smoking campaign that uses the two most genderless ‘things’ I know in the most sexless genre that is, of course, Sci-fi… (although they clearly love each other)…

Jeffrey Lewis takes all my insecurities, writes a poem, sets them to a melody and somehow makes me feel good about them. Sometimes he does this via the medium of comic strip instead. Here’s his new video.

Roger Corman- who made ‘B’s so good they’re worth rearranging the alphabet for- is coming to Edinburgh this June for a full-on retrospectacle and interview at Edinburgh Film Festival.

As a wee appetiser I found a cool video of Corman, MotM hero Bruce Campbell, Rob Zombie, Faizon Love at dinner at the strangely attractive Jon Favreau’s house.

And for dessert you can also go see one of Corman’s many proteges, Joe Dante (of ‘Gremlins’ fame) at EIFF too. Whoop. I just discovered he directed this defining televisual moment of my childhood.

Went to see Dario Argento horror film Suspiria last night. I’d wanted to see an Argento movie ever since I heard George A Romero talk about him at Edinburgh Film Festival. It was the last film to be made in Technicolor and it definitely has something of Wizard of Oz about it. Apparently Argento was inspired by Snow White.

Here’s a particularly brutal-but beautiful- early scene. WARNING: not for tender of age or faint of heart.

I guess you could say I was ‘bewitched’. Was just thinking how much I’d like to see of the maestro’s work when I opened an email announcing his new film ‘Giallo’ will be given it’s world premiere at Edinburgh Film Festival 2009.  Tickets on sale this week. Spooky.
